Positive change for the events industry - Kerrin MacPhie, Chief Executive, The Meetings Industry Association

For most of the UK the outcome of the general election will have come as no surprise last week, however, the impact this will have on the future of the UK events sector is much lesser known.

Despite this, change comes with a window of opportunity to drive events up the government agenda, something that we are already pouncing on alongside many other like-minded organisations.

As policies evolve and establish in the coming months, we’ll be first in line to equip government with the intelligence it needs to address the opportunities and challenges we’re well aware of, including the importance of apprenticeships in overcoming recruitment challenges and inspiring the next generation of event professionals. In this month’s newsletter, we delve into the new apprenticeship levy. What are the new requirements? How will they affect current apprenticeships and future opportunities? Additionally, we feature a thought-provoking piece from M&IT on event professionals and their vision for the future of the events industry, along with a piece from Diversity Alliance and their recent, ‘Driving Success Through Diversity: Data Report 2024’ as well as un update on our next webinar in collaboration with EMA.We welcome your feedback and suggestions for future topics. Stay tuned and stay connected!

WHAT’S NEW

What does the new political landscape look like for apprenticeships?

With the recent change in government, several new policies have been introduced that could significantly impact the events industry.

These policies include changes in funding for apprenticeships, new regulations for event safety, and potential tax incentives for event organizers.

The focus will be on the delivery of the new ‘growth and skills levy’ which will give employers more flexibility but employers would still need to get on board.

Eventprofs react to Labour landslide

Whilst the biggest focus will be on a unified strategy, tax allowances and the integration with government priorities, here, Anna Green, Managing Director ,Broadsword shares her thoughts, “The election outcome brings a sense of optimism; if it leads to economic stability, this will be great news for the events industry.

A cornerstone will be to provide high-quality creative education and ensure access to creative careers for people from all backgrounds. With promises of significant investment in education, it's important for us to get behind initiatives such as Events Apprenticeships and actively encourage pathways that inspire school leavers to pursue careers in our fantastic industry.”

And Kerrin MacPhie, CEO, Meetings Industry Association shared her thoughts, “With less than half (47%) of the sector currently employing apprentices according to our latest quarterly MIA Insights, we welcome Labour’s intention to create a new ‘growth and skills levy’ with Skills England. This fresh approach will allow operators greater flexibility to use up to 50% of their levy contributions to fund training through alternative routes to support the exact training that is required to help the sector thrive.

“This, alongside the party’s commitment to reduce unemployment within the 18-21 category, is promising news and will help to make apprenticeships in the sector a more attractive proposition.”
